What is a DPF and why does it block?

DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter, these are fitted on diesel engine vehicles to reduce emissions by collecting carbon particles. Over time these filters can become blocked if not regularly serviced, which may lead to costly replacement.

Vehicle manufacturers have developed different DPF regeneration strategies but essentially the temperature in the DPF has to be increased to the point where soot trapped in the core burns to ash. For this to happen automatically, it is normally necessary for the vehicle to be driven for an uninterrupted period at moderate speed, typically on a motorway. Unless such a drive cycle happens regularly, soot will build up in the DPF to the point where it may trigger a warning light on the dashboard and cause the engine to revert to a ‘limp home’ mode.

The DPF cleaning process

DPF cleaning involves the use of aqueous cleaning technology and specialist chemicals to reduce the soot emissions generated by your engine.

Usually, your DPF removes soot automatically using passive regeneration. Our cleaning service removes the excess soot that is preventing regeneration from taking place. Once the clean has succeeded, the subsequent storage of soot should begin to disappear and regenerate naturally.
